Avoid Becoming a Dinosaur: 3 Critical Areas of Focus to Stay Relevant in Your Career

You need to get out of your comfort zone

AUTHOR Ibrahim Albuainain - OCTOBER 2024

Many of us still hold onto the hope that we might return to a pre-pandemic lifestyle. However, the reality is that we’re not. The world has changed, and so has the workplace. As I write this post, numerous companies have already embraced new digital tools in the field of automation and data analytics. Yet, for many, especially in the public sector, this transformation has yet to take full effect. The risk of becoming a "dinosaur" in your field—outdated and irrelevant—is greater than ever and to avoid professional extinction, it’s crucial to upskill in three critical areas.

1. Mastering Questioning Techniques

In an era where information is abundant, the ability to ask the right questions is more valuable than ever. Many professionals fail to dig deeper, often accepting surface-level information without challenging its validity or exploring its implications. This lack of inquiry can lead to missed opportunities and suboptimal decisions.

To stay relevant, develop a habit of questioning everything—processes, data, assumptions, and even your own conclusions. Effective questioning not only uncovers hidden insights but also drives innovation and problem-solving. By enhancing your questioning techniques, you ensure that you’re not just keeping up with the status quo but actively pushing the boundaries in your field.

2. Handling Large Datasets

Data is the new currency, and those who can manage and interpret it effectively will be the ones leading the charge. The ability to handle large datasets is no longer a niche skill; it’s a necessity. From making data-informed decisions to predicting trends, the role of data in shaping strategies cannot be overstated. We are living in an era flooded with overwhelming data, where our lifestyle constantly exposes us to information. If we don't acquire the skills to access and utilize high-quality datasets, we risk missing out on crucial insights and opportunities.

Many professionals, particularly in the public sector, still rely on outdated methods for data handling, which can lead to inefficiencies and errors. Upskilling in data analytics can significantly enhance your ability to make informed decisions. By mastering the art of digesting large datasets, you position yourself as a valuable asset capable of dealing with the complexities of the new era.

3. Embracing Automation

Automation is rapidly transforming industries, streamlining processes, and freeing up human resources for more strategic tasks. However, many professionals resist this change, fearing that automation might render their skills obsolete. The truth is quite the opposite: those who understand and harness the power of automation will thrive.

Start by identifying repetitive tasks in your role that can be automated. Learning to work with automation tools will not only increase your efficiency but also allow you to focus on higher-value activities. Automation is about staying ahead of the curve, ensuring that you’re not left behind as industries evolve. On a personal level, I've managed to triple my productivity over the past seven months by juggling multiple tasks like design conception, online publishing, and data mining almost simultaneously.

Final Thoughts

The landscape of work has shifted, and the pace of change shows no signs of slowing down at least for now. Enhance your relevance and future-proof your career and personal development. If you think this is complicated, try to stay at least informed about the developments and trends. These skills are key for anyone aiming to not only stay competitive but also to thrive and excel in today's dynamic workplace. The time to adapt is now.
